Does Hijama Hurt? What to Expect During Wet Cupping
One of the most common questions we hear. The honest answer might surprise you — most clients describe Hijama as far more comfortable than they expected.
"Does it hurt?" is the first question almost every new client asks about Hijama. The honest answer is: less than you'd expect.
The Dry Cupping Phase The initial cupping (before incisions) creates a pulling, tight sensation on the skin. This can feel intense in very tight areas but is not painful. Most people find it oddly satisfying — like a deep stretch from the inside.
The Incision Phase This is where most anxiety lies — and where most people are pleasantly surprised. The incisions made in Hijama are superficial (1–2mm deep, like a fine scratch). The skin contains relatively few deep pain receptors in this layer. Most clients describe feeling a light scratching sensation or nothing at all.
The Re-cupping Phase Once cups are reapplied over the incisions, you feel suction again. This phase is generally pain-free.
Individual Variation Pain tolerance varies, and areas of the body differ in sensitivity. The back is generally least sensitive; areas with more nerve endings (back of the neck, behind the knees) can be more noticeable.
Our Practitioners' Approach We work at your pace, always. We explain each step before doing it, check in on your comfort throughout, and adapt our approach to your individual sensitivity. No one has ever left our clinic saying it was more painful than they expected.
